The Global Perspectives Fixed Platforms Market Update Report 2008/12

- new fixed platforms market sector report forecasts 30% growth -

City of London based energy analysts, Infield Systems Limited have published the second edition of the fixed Platforms Market Update, the unique global forecast for the fixed platform sector, based upon the entire inventory of all offshore fixed platforms. Infield is an industry leader in providing detailed project information, analysis, forecasts and market due diligence for the offshore oil and gas industry.

Forecast Overview:

Infield forecasts that Capex spend over the next five years for the fixed platform market is expected to be $60bn. This is an increase of over 30% compared to the previous five years. While global numbers of platform units will only increase 8%, there will be a dramatic increase in activity in Africa and Asia . In these two regions alone the increase is expected to be a staggering 245 units or 60% increase over the previous five years. Australasia will see its forecast spend increase from $800m to $2bn. In Europe, with the UK needing to shore up its gas supplies, fixed platform expenditure is expected to account for 36% of the European forecast, with the Netherlands following with 23%.

If current trends continue North American will see a dramatic fall in the number of new platform installations in the Gulf of Mexico . Yet despite this, in terms of the regional dispersion of forecast fixed platform installations, it will still hold the largest share, at thirty per cent of the total number of fixed platforms installed between 2008 and 2012.

The global forecast is expected to peak in 2008, with the expected spend of $13.8bn falling to $9.2bn in 2012. The majority of this decline is due to Asia where in 2009 we expect an increase in annual spend of 90% compared to 2006, but by 2012 this annual spend will fall back to the 2006 level. Beyond 2009 we also expect to see declines in spend in Europe, Latin America and of course North America.

The decline in fixed platforms is partly offset by the growth of the floating production market. This growth has been driven by a decline in the number and size of new discoveries and access problems to reserves in certain shallow water regions. Those active in and pursing this market need to know exactly where the opportunities are and these are set out in the Global Perspectives Fixed Platform Market Update.
