Asia Pacific Market Update Forecast 2009/13

Infield Energy Analysts forecasts a rapid growth and development of the offshore oil and gas market in Asia (India, South East Asia and East Asia) compared to other regions. The Asian market is becoming more diverse and sophisticated, attracting more investment and is seeing an increase in capacity and assets. Infield will publish in the next few weeks a new edition for the period 2009/13; US$69.5bn is expected to be invested in the region, this is a 95% increase on the previous five years. The capital investment is expected to peak in 2009 and 2011 with around US$15 bn in each year.

The two main players will be India and Indonesia which between them are expected to have the highest total capital expenditure representing $12.1 billion and $12.9 respectively. This represents 36% of the region’s total and again is 95% up on the previous five years. Big increases are also expected in Vietnam and Malaysia, which account for a further 24% of the regions total. China relatively static with US$7.6bn, aacounting for 11% of the region’s total. It is the other smaller players in the region that account for 29% of the capital investment.

The next five years will be also characterised by the emergence of the deep and ultra-deepwater activity which will be the main impetus for the forecast global growth through to 2012. It is expected that 36 fields with a total of 7,915 mmboe will come on stream in water depths of 500 metres and greater. This is mostly due to the increased deepwater activity in Indonesia, India and Malaysia. Although there are assets being constructed such as deepwater pipelay and heavy lift vessels, the geographical spread of deepwater developments means that comprehensive coverage of the market is still an issue in the industry.

The offshore market of Australasia is also expected to grow rapidly in terms of capital expenditure, with a three-fold increase forecasted for the 2008 to 2012 period compared to the previous five years. Capital expenditure is forecasted to reach its highest levels of $6.0 billion in 2010. Australia will have US$21.6 billion total capital expenditure for the forecast period.
