Southern Africa offers a host of opportunities for the explorer, from hypothetical equivalents to Brazilian sub-salt plays offshore Namibia, renewed interest in offshore South Africa, the potential for major shale gas and coal bed methane plays associated with South Africa’s massive onshore coal reserves, and last but not least real, major gas discoveries in Mocambique (and Tanzania).
But not only for the explorer!
Regionally, operational support in the form of geophysics and drilling is scarce, the engineering industry is fledgling, operations bases are only partly available and appropriate petroleum infrastructure needs to be developed. On the other hand, South Africa itself offers access to skills and general infrastructure, including port facilities. This speaks to major opportunities for oil & gas companies of all sorts, especially for British companies willing to take advantage of the special relationship that exists between the UK and Southern Africa, particular the bilateral UK-South Africa Trade Agreement which aims to double trade by 2015, and to work closely with local companies.
Working with the dti group within the South African High Commission in London, our January Finding Petroleum Forum will address these issues and opportunities.
